THIS MONTH’S LEADERSHIP HEROES
This month we are celebrating Sibongile Nxumalo (front row, white shirt) and Bongane Ndlovu (back row) who head up Nhlayiseko Aged Care.
For over 18 months, these passionate women have been volunteering their time and meagre resources to take care of vulnerable elderly people in their remote village, Rooiboklaagte B.
They help wherever they can, paying home visits to check on the elders, cleaning their homes and clothing, providing food when they have it and the most valuable resource, their loving presence, laughter and incredible song!
The team has reported shocking stories of old folks being robbed, raped, cheated by unscrupulous community members and abused by family members who exploit them for their pensions. Nhlayiseko’s current focus is on illegal money lenders who position themselves at pension payout points and lock the old folks into high interest loans (we’re talking 50-100%) and take the old folks’s ID and pension cards as collateral. The Nhlayiseko ladies are confronting these criminals and restoring the rights of the elders. Much respect to you ladies!
Read more about their work here.
How can you help? Your donation towards cleaning equipment, food and materials will make a big difference in the old folks’ lives. It costs R50/US$5 a month to cover the cost of a weekly home visit to clean clothing and the home, and for two communal meals a month. You can donate here, at Seeds of Light’s website.
Congratulations to the ladies for making the front page of Xap Xap Newspaper!
Thank you and please pass on this info to your friends and network!
